Video Encoding & Transcoding — FFmpeg, AWS MediaConvert & Multi-Profile Delivery

Production-quality encoding pipelines for VOD and live. H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 profiles tuned for streaming — packaged for HLS and DASH delivery, ready for any CDN.

What We Deliver

Multi-Profile EncodingH.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 encoding ladders — resolution, bitrate and quality settings optimised per-profile.
FFmpeg Pipeline DesignCustom FFmpeg command sets for batch VOD encoding, GPU acceleration and automated quality control.
AWS MediaConvert WorkflowsCloud VOD encoding jobs via AWS MediaConvert — scalable, serverless and integrated with S3 and CloudFront.
HLS & DASH PackagingSegment and package encoded files into HLS (.m3u8) and DASH (.mpd) manifests with CMAF fMP4 segments.
Subtitle & Caption EmbeddingWebVTT, SRT and CEA-608/708 closed captions embedded in HLS and DASH manifests. Multi-language support.
Thumbnail GenerationSprite sheets and per-chapter thumbnails for player seek preview — generated automatically in the pipeline.
Per-Title EncodingContent-adaptive encoding — complex scenes get higher bitrate, static content is compressed harder. Reduces storage cost.
Quality MetricsVMAF, SSIM and PSNR scoring on reference encodes. Objective quality benchmarking before production rollout.

Encoding Process

Source Analysis

Review your source files — codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, audio tracks. Identify any format conversion needed before encoding.

Ladder Design

Define rendition profiles based on your target devices, audience bandwidth distribution and storage budget. Choose codec (H.264 / H.265 / AV1).

Encode & Package

Run encoding pipeline (FFmpeg or MediaConvert), package segments, generate manifests, validate with hls.js and dash.js.

QC & Deliver

VMAF quality scoring, playback testing on target devices, then hand over pipeline scripts, config files and encoded output.

Who This Is For

VOD Libraries

Encode large content libraries efficiently. Per-title encoding cuts storage costs while maintaining visual quality across all devices.

Live Broadcasters

Real-time encoding configuration for OBS, Wirecast and hardware encoders — correct keyframe intervals, bitrates and formats for your CDN.

Enterprise & Education

Training video libraries and corporate events that need consistent quality, subtitle support and cost-efficient cloud encoding.

Frequently Asked Questions

H.264 has the widest device compatibility and lowest encode/decode cost. H.265/HEVC offers better compression but has licensing and Android fragmentation considerations. AV1 compresses best but costs more compute to encode and has more limited older-device support. Most production ladders mix H.264 as a compatibility baseline with H.265 or AV1 for capable devices.
Per-title (content-adaptive) encoding tunes bitrate to each piece of content's actual complexity — a static talking-head video needs less bitrate than a fast-action scene at the same visual quality. For large VOD libraries, the storage and CDN cost savings usually justify the added encoding pipeline complexity; for small libraries it may not be worth it.
FFmpeg gives full control and no per-minute cost, but you own the compute infrastructure and scaling. AWS MediaConvert is serverless and scales automatically but has a usage-based cost. Teams with existing AWS infrastructure and variable encoding volume usually prefer MediaConvert; teams with steady, high-volume encoding often find self-managed FFmpeg cheaper at scale.
Yes — WebVTT, SRT and CEA-608/708 closed captions are embedded directly into the HLS/DASH manifests during packaging, with multi-language track support, so this doesn't require a separate post-processing step.
