MediaLive encodes your live feed into an ABR ladder. MediaPackage packages that output into HLS/DASH/CMAF and serves as your origin. MediaTailor sits in front of MediaPackage and stitches ads into the manifest via SSAI. Each is a distinct layer — most production pipelines use all three together.
Manual console setup works for a proof of concept, but production deployments should use CloudFormation or Terraform for repeatability — so channel configuration can be version-controlled, reviewed and redeployed identically across environments.
MediaLive and MediaPackage are largely fixed per-channel costs regardless of viewership; CloudFront CDN egress is the cost that scales with audience size. An architecture review sized to your channel count and expected concurrent viewers is the only reliable way to estimate this accurately.
Both. Migrations from on-premise encoders or another cloud provider typically run in parallel with the existing setup until the new AWS pipeline is validated, then cut over with minimal viewer-facing disruption.
